Supporting the North London Hospice

During the summer term 2024 our Cubs have been taking part in a very special charity challenge which is possibly the most exciting that our Pack has ever done! We have been supporting the amazing work of the North London Hospice by taking part in their “Big Fun Art Adventure” – further details HERE - and in April we took delivery of a fibreglass owl ready to be decorated by us before going on public display at various locations such as libraries and shopping centres during the summer and October half-term holidays. The challenge was launched at our Cub meeting on Thursday 25th April when we were visited by some real owls from the Imperial Bird of Prey Academy.

We held a competition to design how The Owl should look to go on public display and the entries were very kindly judged by the local artist Selina Javaid. She said: "What a joy these were to look through" and with so many amazing entries submitted, Selina decided that The Owl should have a blend of a number of designs.
The front would feature Reuben's design (Selina said: "I enjoyed his control of colour pattern and creation of magic") whilst the top half of the back would be Milo's design ("his colour scheme and graphic line were hypnotic") and the back would also feature some of Teddy's words associated with Cub Scouting ("his pride bursting through").
So that all the Cubs could get fully involved in the end product, The Owl would also feature Seth's idea of having areas which they could all paint and put their name in ("his sense of belonging and community was so thoughtful"). Very many thanks to Selina for her expertise in judging the entries and for her kind words about all the entries.
Now it was time to bring the designs into reality and most of the work was done at a special arts and crafts themed meeting on 23rd May, before some finishing touches, including all of the Cubs adding their names, was done during our fire lighting and cooking meeting on 6th June. A huge thank you also to Annette who worked miracles on The Owl overall. Below are a selection of photos showing how The Owl took shape and the end product.

With The Owl completed it was time to give him a name and he became The Grand Owl. All Cubs worldwide promise to do their best during The Grand Howl and everyone had certainly done their very best here.
It was now time to pay for The Grand Owl and please click HERE to read more.
